driNkin’ & DRivIn’ wiTh NatE

11/27/2013

Met up with my buddy Nate for a few drinks at a dump called Jen’s Place in Brunswick.  It shares a metal building with a yoga studio out near the railroad tracks on the edge of town.  There’s a parking lot across the street but it’s guarded by a chain-link fence…nothing in the parking lot but a few oil trucks.  Jen’s Place ain’t gonna get the after-theatre crowd.

Anyway, Nate was in a good mood. He’s usually in a good mood when he’s drinking on a Saturday morning.

We sat a small table with a bunch of people. The place was noisy and busy, but it was easy to get drinks. We had plenty of them. I remember Nate almost spilled one drink when he set it down an a spoon.

“Nate likes to drink,” I told the guy sitting next to me. “He’s a heavy drinker.”

Everybody laughed.

Nate was wearing a green dinosaur hoodie. The kind where the hood pulls up and makes you look like a T-Rex. He had a guitar in his lap. Yup, a guitar. He played a couple of tunes. Tunes he just made up on the spot.

Everybody loved  the tunes.

After we had a few more drinks, we decided to leave. Somebody said we should go downtown.

Everybody loves downtown.

The problem was neither of us had a car. So we stumbled across a bridge and stopped at an empty beach on the river bank. It would have been a good place to drink, but we didn’t have any drinks with us.

At one point, Nate lied down and said, rather loudly, that he wanted to “get some sleep.” I thought he was going to pass out. Fortunately, he was able to get up and keep moving. Hey, it was cold out and passing out on bridge would not be a good thing.

Once we got into downtown Brunswick, things got crazy.

Nate said he wanted to race some cars. He ended up taking a new Mustang and, like a fool, I joined in.

Let me tell you, Nate drives FAST. Pedal to the metal FAST. He wouldn’t let up. He drove FAST on the straightaways and FAST on the curves. “Nate you’re driving too fast through the curves,” I said. He wouldn’t listen. We spun out several times, but somehow managed to get the car back on the road.

And yes, there was a police car involved but Nate drove his Mustang faster than the police car. We didn’t get caught.

The speed, the spinouts, the police…it’s a miracle neither one of us blacked out or that we actually have a video…you gotta see it to

You had me going Nick- but the video was a great punchline! I’m glad you had a safe ending to a fun night.
