This is my version of the picture Saturday Night Live uses for its “Maine Justice” skit. The SNL photographer visited in the summer and missed the “stark beauty” of a Bangor winter.

If you haven’t seen the skit here’s a link. It’s done in the standard SNL “show within a show” format and, frankly, I don’t get it. (Unrelated tirade: SNL Producers must have issued a memo requiring 5-7 “show within a show” routines each night. The format has become a cliche. It seems confining. Aren’t there any other successful skit comedy formats?)

Anyway, this is a look from the Chamberlain Bridge which crosses the Penobscot River and connects Bangor and Brewer. The metal railroad bridge in the foreground spans the Kenduskeag Stream as it enters the Penobscot. Decades ago, this area used to be a thriving square loaded with a variety of stores and small businesses. Now you see a parking garage on the left and banks and offices on the right. Progress.

  1. I’m with you on that “Maine Justice” bit. Didn’t make much sense to me. But maybe I don’t know enough about Maine. Or rather, I don’t know enough about what New Yorkers believe about Maine.
